Ben Quinoñes starts by giving a definition of « social capital’ and a presentation of what has already been written on the impact of social capital onto development, and how the notion of social capital can be applied in the context of solidarity finance. He then explains the dilemmas of collective action and gives some examples of their resolutions.
He then examines the two facets of the social capital formation process: on one hand, acquisition of knowledge, competence, and practice, and on the other hand, the development of confidence between individuals.
Finally, the values that influence the rational decision-making of individuals are analyzed.
